Biography
Vince's newest work is the CD "SUBTE". Inspired by a kaleidoscope
of musical influences, his latest CD has drawn inspiration from the ruins
of Mexico, the subways of Buenos Aires, the infectious rhythms and voices
of Latin America, the trance of the European club scenes, but always
filtered through his musical formation in jazz. The Cd features all original
songs with performances by Daniel Binelli on bandoneon, Pepe Danza on
percussion, Raphael Geronimo on percussion, Tania Hancheroff on vocals,
Miles Hill on acoustic bass, Daryl Jahnke on guitar, Marc Rogers on
electric bass, Rebecca Shoichet on vocals, Randall Stoll on drums, and
Brad Turner on fender rhodes.
As a trumpeter, Vince has been well entrenched in the west
coast studio/jazz scene for many years with numerous commercial, film
and album credits.
For years his trumpet solos have been heard on many TV series including
DaVinci's Inquest, The Chris Isaak Show, MacGyver, Lonesome Dove, Scene
of the Crime, and numerous feature films. As a jazz artist Vince has
had the privilege of sharing stages and studios with top artists in Canada,
the United States, and Europe. His impressive line up of work credentials
is punctuated by performances/recordings with Chuck Israels, Bobby Shew,
Natalie Cole, Don Thompson, Eddie Daniels, Ernan Lopez Nussa, Danilo
Perez, Robben Ford, and Daniel Binelli.
Vince's original compositions have supported films
presented by TV networks - PBS, Fox Network, WTN and the CBC in North
America. In "Diary
of An Alien", Vince's "probing electronic score" received
PMIA's West Coast Music Award for Best Original Score for Film or Television
in 2001. His original piece "Why Didn't You Tell Me" from the
album "FOR ALL WE KNOW". has been featured in films by directors
Carl Bessai and Anne Wheeler. The Sundance Film Festival, Toronto International
Film Festival, and Berlin International Film Festival showed his film
scoring work in the feature film "Lola"by Carl Bessai. Soon
to be released in late 2003 is another new feature by Bessai titled "EMILE" starring
Ian McKellan with music by Vince Mai.
Vince Mai's first solo release, a Jazz CD titled "For All We Know" was a dedication to the idiom of jazz that represents his primary influences. "For All We Know" is "cool" revisited - a collection of sparkling jazz classics performed by some of Canada's finest jazz musicians - Miles Black on piano, Miles Hill on bass, Dave Robbins on drums and Tania Hancheroff on vocals.
